Maldives in 4 Days: Malé & Maafushi Travel Guide

If you want to experience the Maldives without spending your entire holiday inside a luxury resort, Malé + Maafushi is a great option.

My wife and I took this route for a short anniversary getaway. With both of us working full-time, the idea was simple: take a few days off, slow down, roam around and enjoy some proper time away from work.

Here's a practical breakdown if you're planning something similar.

🗓️ The Itinerary

Day 1 — Dhaka → Malé

Fly from Dhaka to Velana International Airport and spend your first night in Malé.

Keep the day simple:

• Walk around the city

• Explore the waterfront

• Visit local shops and markets

• Try some Maldivian food

Malé is busy and densely populated, but it's interesting to see the everyday side of the Maldives before heading to the islands.

Day 2 — Malé → Maafushi

Take a morning speedboat to Maafushi.

After checking in, don't rush into activities. Maafushi is small enough to explore on foot, so spend the afternoon simply roaming around.

Maafushi is a local inhabited island, so don't expect the isolated luxury-resort experience.

Instead, you get:

There are plenty of hotels and guesthouses in both Malé and Maafushi. When comparing them, look beyond the headline room price and check the final amount, location, breakfast and cancellation policy.

🛂 Before You Fly

One thing you don't want to leave until the last minute is the entry paperwork.

Tourists generally receive a Maldives tourist visa on arrival if they meet the entry requirements. You'll also need to complete the Traveller Declaration through IMUGA within 96 hours before arrival.

Final Thoughts

For a short getaway from Dhaka, Malé + Maafushi works really well.

One night gives you a taste of the capital, while two nights in Maafushi give you enough time for beaches, island exploration and a proper day of water activities.

It's not the luxury-resort version of the Maldives.

It's the walk-around, get-on-a-boat, jump-in-the-water, eat-something-good and enjoy-the-view version.

And for a four-day escape, that's exactly what we were looking for.
